Fishing Lake Bernard Frank, June 2021

Nice lake! I enjoyed exploring about half of it, and one day I want to return and bring conventional gear to allow me to chuck deeper into the lake and try to catch channel catfish and bigger bass.

Here are the facts:

  1. Lake Frank is in in Derwood, Maryland, which is east of Rockville.
  2. There is plenty of parking. I parked just southeast of the lake, here are the coordinates: 39°06’17.1″N 77°07’12.7″W.
  3. It is abut a five minute walk to the water down a crumbly, paved path.
  4. This reservoir is 54 acres, and there is a paved walking path around much of the lake. (See this map.)
  5. No boating or kayaking is allowed; nor is swimming.
  6. There is space to fish conventional gear and fly gear.
  7. I chucked a small white popper in shaded areas and scored tons of panfish and a few young largemouth bass near the dam and the abandoned/closed boat ramp, which is about a quarter of the way around the lake. The boat ramp coordinates are: 39.105008, -77.110742.
  8. Top water hits might have been stimulated by the cicadas, who are falling into the water — to the delight of the fish.
